Okay, I know what you might be thinking – Detroit?! This might not be one of my most exotic posts but hear me out! Detroit is often a city that gets a bad rap, and while it does have its challenges like any major metropolis, there’s so much more to it than meets the eye. Let’s dive into why Detroit should be on your travel radar.
Getting there
If you’re coming from Northern Ontario like I did, the drive to Detroit is surprisingly manageable—about six hours, give or take. Depending on where you’re starting your journey, you have options to cross the border either via the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, both of which place you right in the heart of the city. If driving isn’t your thing, Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) is a major international hub, making it easy to fly in from anywhere.
Why Detroit Deserves Your Attention
Detroit is a city rich in history and culture, with plenty to offer visitors. Here are a few must-see spots that should be on your list when you visit the Motor City:
- Eastern Market: A historic market district that’s bursting with life. Whether you’re into fresh produce, local art, or unique dining experiences, Eastern Market has something for everyone. It’s a vibrant place that truly captures the spirit of Detroit.
- The BELT: An alley-turned-art space, The BELT is a creative hotspot in downtown Detroit. Filled with murals, installations, and galleries, it’s a testament to the city’s thriving arts scene. It’s also a great place to grab a drink and soak in the atmosphere.
- Little Caesars Arena: Whether you’re a sports fan or just love live entertainment, Little Caesars Arena is the place to be. Home to the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons, it’s also a premier venue for concerts and other events. The surrounding area is bustling with restaurants and bars, making it a perfect night out. We were lucky to attend another AJR concert here. I also enjoyed the queso, tacos and margs at Bakersfield just down the road.
- Joe Louis Fist & Detroit Riverfront: No trip to Detroit is complete without visiting the iconic Joe Louis Fist sculpture. Located near the picturesque Detroit Riverfront, it’s a powerful symbol of the city’s resilience and determination. After snapping a few photos, take a stroll along the riverfront for stunning views of the skyline and Canada across the water.
Detroit is a city that’s easy to underestimate, but it’s full of surprises. Whether you’re drawn by its rich history, vibrant arts scene, or lively sports culture, Detroit has something to offer everyone. So, next time you’re planning a trip, consider giving Detroit a chance—you might just fall in love with the Motor City like I did.
