An African safari should be on everyone’s bucket list. It had been on mine for years – a dream I often imagined but never acted on. For 2025, I’ve made a promise to myself: no more sitting on my bucket list. Why do we so often delay our dreams, waiting for the “perfect” time to make them happen?
At first, we almost postponed our trip to Tanzania. The idea of planning something so big felt intimidating – especially since we had no previous experience with Africa. But we pushed through the doubts, and I’m so glad we did. There are countless safari companies out there, and choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. However, finding the right partner makes the entire process effortless and enjoyable.
For me it was essential to book with a local company. I didn’t want my money funneled to an American-run business operating in Africa. I wanted to support the communities we would be visiting. After thorough research, I found Frank at Serengeti Clarity. From our very first conversation, Frank’s professionalism and kindness shone through, and we quickly formed a friendship. Together, we discussed everything – length of stay, budget, accommodations and the amenities we were looking for. Frank made the planning process seamless, and booking with Serengeti Clarity was an easy decision. To this day, Travis and I remain in touch with Frank and I can’t wait for another safari with him and his incredible team.
The Safari Journey Begins
We booked our flights to Dar es Salaam, and from there, Frank arranged for our short-haul flight to the Seronera Airstrip, located right in the heart of Serengeti National Park. Flying into the park on a small propeller plane was a surreal experience. As we descended, we could already see glimpses of the breathtaking Serengeti landscape—rolling plains dotted with wildlife.
Upon landing, our guide was waiting to greet us, and before we even left the airstrip, our adventure began. I expected to see animals—it is a safari, after all—but I wasn’t prepared for just how quickly and abundantly they would appear. Within minutes of starting our game drive, we saw hippos basking in the water, elegant giraffes grazing, and zebras moving in perfect unison. Then came the highlight of the day: a pride of lions feasting on a buffalo kill. It was both humbling and awe-inspiring to witness nature so raw and unfiltered.

First Impressions of the Serengeti
The Serengeti’s vast, golden plains are even more stunning in person than any photo could capture. Just driving through the park felt like a privilege—every turn brought new sights and sounds. After an exhilarating day of travel and wildlife encounters, we were ready to unwind. Our first and second night’s stay at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge was the perfect retreat. The lodge blended luxury with the natural beauty of the Serengeti, offering comfort and serenity after an action-packed day.

Luxury Meets Adventure
One of the highlights of our stay came the next day, when we headed to the Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge. This lodge offered an intimate connection with the Serengeti, with tented accommodations that made us feel like we were in the heart of the wilderness without sacrificing luxury.
Our time at Lake Ndutu also included an unforgettable hot air balloon safari. If you’re planning a trip to Africa, this is a must add-on to your itinerary—trust me, you won’t regret it. Floating high above the Serengeti as the sun rises is a magical experience. The panoramic views of the endless plains, and wildlife, gave us a perspective you simply can’t get from the ground.

Exploring Ngorongoro Crater
From the Serengeti, we continued our journey to the iconic Ngorongoro Crater. Known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven for wildlife. Here, we were lucky enough to spot the rare black rhino, as well as elephants and an array of other animals in one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth.
Our stay at the Escarpment Luxury Lodge was nothing short of extraordinary. Perched on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the lodge offered breathtaking views and impeccable hospitality, making our time at Ngorongoro even more special.

A Cultural Connection
On our last day, we visited a Maasai village and had the privilege of learning about their traditions, culture, and way of life. This experience was deeply moving and reminded us of the incredible diversity of people and cultures that make Africa so extraordinary. The Maasai’s vibrant clothing, energetic dances, and warm hospitality made this visit a highlight of our trip.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead
Reflecting on this trip, I can’t believe we almost let our fears keep us from experiencing one of the most unforgettable adventures of our lives. If an African safari is on your bucket list, don’t wait—start planning. Trust me, it’s worth it. And when you do, consider supporting local companies like Serengeti Clarity—not only will you have an incredible trip, but you’ll also form meaningful connections along the way. Let Frank know Nikki sent you and he and the team will take extra special care of you.
As for me, I can’t wait to return to Africa. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and the warm people we met along the way have captured my heart. I’m already dreaming of the day I’ll be back, surrounded by its beauty and reconnecting with the wonderful people who made it all possible.
