Being an island surrounded by endless stunning beach options, Maui is a a paradise waiting to be explored. While it’s impossible to visit them all in one trip, especially if you only have a week for vacation, here are some of our top picks for the best beaches in Maui. As enthusiasts of quieter spots away from the resort area, we’ve curated a list that promises both serenity and natural beauty.
Red Sand Beach – The red sand beach is tucked away on the road to Hana. There is no parking area, and we weren’t sure we were at the right spot. There is a sports field and an elementary school – if you see that, you are in the right place. This is a hidden gem that rewards the adventurous. You have to follow a rugged path to get to the red-hued sand beach. It is not easily accessible for those with mobility issues. Ensure you bring all your essentials with you as it is about a 15-minute walk from where you can park to the beach. The trail can be narrow and become dangerously slippery when wet, so caution is advised. We were accompanied by a friendly, local dog who added to the charm of the experience.
Black Sand Beach – Located within Waianapanapa Park along the road to Hana, the Black Sand Beach offers a surreal landscape formed by volcanic activity. To visit, be sure to obtain a permit in advance, as entry to the park requires a reservation. The park is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can visit the beach or camp in the park if you make a reservation. You can find more information and make your reservations (30 days in advance) at https://gostateparks.hawaii.gov/waianapanapa. The small fee for visiting is worth the experience. Despite encountering rain during our time there, we made the most of it by enjoying the waves (you’re already wet!) and embracing the surroundings. Since it rained we practically had the beach to ourselves!
Hamoa Beach – Famous for it’s picturesque beauty, Hamoa Beach is a must-visit spot that lives up to it’s postcard beauty. It’s beautiful shores can be viewed from the road above. While parking is limited, the golden sand and crystal clear waters make it worth it, especially if you’ve spent a lot of the day in the car making your way through the road to Hana. Take a moment to admire the view from the road above before descending to the shore.
Slaughterhouse Beach – Accessed by staircase, Slaughterhouse Beach offers unparalleled beauty and seclusion. The sand can get hot! Wear shoes so you don’t burn your feet, from my personal experience (lol). The sight of sea turtles or Honu, made it a truly memorable experience. There were even some swimming close to me at one point. As always, in Hawaii, be respectful of the turtles. Remember to wear your reef-safe sunscreen and be mindful of parking restrictions.
DT Fleming –Less crowded than the resort areas, DT Fleming Beach is a favourite among surfers and boogie-boarders. Located near Slaughterhouse beach, it offers ample opportunities for water sport enthusiasts to enjoy the waves.
